Now that you’ve finished reading the entire text of Twelfth Night, have viewed several performances (including film, stage, and those of your classmates), and contributed to your own performance within this silly play, it’s time to look back and consider where you’ve been.
- How important is merry-making in society? This was our central unit question — now that you’ve studied a very silly play, complete with heaps of merry-making, what do you think? Is merry-making important? How? When? Why?
yes! I really do think that merry-making is important to our society, environment. Because without all the fun, life would just be plain boring; all we’d do for the rest of our life would be eat, sleep and work. Mostly, from my opinion, merry-making (fun & laughter) is probably the only reason why we still look forward to the next day, without it, might as well just be hell.
Even though i think having lots of fun in our daily life is important, it doens’t mean that we can choose to have it whenever and whereever we want. There are limit and boundaries. For example: school time is the time for focuss and concentration not for all the sillyness we can think of (it also depends on what subject we’re in too), after school, weekends and holidays is probably the most appropriate time for the silliest ideas you can imagine.
- What do you know now, at the end of our unit, that you didn’t before? Perhaps you now know a couple of lines of Shakespeare. Or maybe you’ve learned how to better speak in front of an audience. Or perhaps you now know how to work better in a group. Or you know that having fun really is the most important part of creating a play. Or you’ve learned that creativity requires long periods of time in order to “get into it.” Whatever it is — please tell your readers what you’ve learned in our unit.
There were tons of things that I’ve learnt during this unit. Some of them are;
- Most important– remembering the lines for a whole act from the Shake Spearian book “Twelfth Night” just because we had to present a short play :] and I’m pretty proud too, my brain normally doens’t work that way. For me to actually remember lines and texts ususally takes ages.
- I’ve learnt what the play “Twelfth Night” is all about.
- That the movie “She’s The Man” was actually originally written by Shake Speare in the book called “Twelfth Night”
- I’ve learnt what “Blockings” meant–used in theatres.
- I’ve learnt how important merry-making is to our daily life routines, and without it life would just be a living hell.
- I’ve learnt to develope my Shake Spearian language skills, and i’m able to understand more after this unit.

So as you all know, our grade (Unis Hanoi, Grade is divided into 2 different groups to travel to 2 different parts of Hanoi. One of the location is Hue and the other is Hoi An. How i feel about the trip:
-worried, scared, nervous, bad, disapointed because of the groups that were separated (Kai qi, Thuy, and Tram are in group B as more me, in group A, lonely)
-sad because i’m not at all close to the people in my group.
-happy because i’ve never been to either place
-looking forward to it because right after that will be the spring break
-excited because my friends promised me to call me as often as they could (hopefully they keep that promise)
-worried about who my roomates are going to be, since i have no clue of who i could be with
-lucky that we don’t have to be at school at 4 in the morning like group B
-unlucky because we get back form the field trip at 8 o’clock at night
-tired because of all the activities we’ll have to do
-scared and nervous about not getting lost since we’re allowed to go out and have dinner by our friends (or in my case, by my self)

- If you were commissioned to design and direct a production of Twelfth Night, where would you set it? What would your Illyria look like? What would be your take on each character? What costumes, music, and special effects would you want?
If I was to stage Illyria, it would be a setting like in fairy tales.
Where everything is just so perfect. It probably be an island with
clear blue water surrounding it. There would be lots of trees,
with bright green grass throughout the entire island.
The sound effects I would use as a background to the island
would be; every place you go, you could hear birds chipping,
trees moving and the sound of wind blowing through your hair.
And to make the island even more dreamy, maybe a soft
instrument song as the base of the sound effect.
Costumes…? Olivia; pink and white princess style dress with
glittery lace trimmings, a small cute diamond tiara, with ballet
sort of shoes. Orsino; white tuxedo, black tie, shiny black shoes,
spiky gelled up hair.
- How would you get each character off the stage in 5.1? Think about where they are going and how they feel. Do they stop and shake hands with other characters? Do they slink off or run off? This will be the last time the audience sees them. What impressions do you want to leave?
Well it’s not like they’re never going to see each other again.
It’s just the end of a situation, which means, they wouldn’t
be needing to actually exit formally like they’re leaving forever.
Maybe they could all exit at the same time in a big group of
family and friends. Definately Sebastian and Viola will be walking
off next to each other due to the fact that they thought their
twin had never survived the ship wreck. But again, since they
both have their loved mate, they could walk on the other side of
the twins. Which means that the twins will be next to each other,
while next to the loved ones.

1.) Look carefully at Antonio’s speech in 3.4.316-321.
But O how vile an idol proves this god!
Thou has, Sebastian, done good geature shame.
In nature there’s no blemish but the mind:
None can be called deformed but the unkind.
Vitue is beauty, but the beauteous-evil
Are empty trunks, o’er-flourished by the devil.
2.) Paraphrase it (put into your own words).
What a terrible person you have ended up to be.
None can be called evil but the evil.
Virtue is beauty and beauty is evil.
3.) Comment on it.
This phrase was said by Antonio, to Viola, or to his point of view, Sebastian. Antonio mentions the name ‘Sebastian’, giving Viola a clue that her twin broher, Sebastian is still alive. In this phrase I like the line
“Virtue is beauty, but the beauteous-evil
Are empty trunks, o’er-flourished by the devil.” (3.4.20-21)
4.) Give some of your own examples of what he is talking about. Use experiences you’ve had, seen, or heard about.
An example of someone pretending to be someone there not is when our parents pretend to be santa claus on christmas.

Have you ever played a practical joke on someone, or been the victim of a practical joke? Write about your experience, making parallels between what happened to you and what’s happening to Malvolio.
To be honest; i’ve tried loads of practical jokes on others, but sadly none of them were successful. But the worst part is that I was actually a ‘victim’ of an actual practical joke in one of my school. So this is what happened.
It was just a normal day in school right at the end of lunch break where I was hanging around with my friends. Then right before the bell was about to ring, a bunch of guys in my class came up to me and while one of them said that they’re able to pin an actual ‘glass’ (full of water) onto the wall, so i asked him to prove it. Surprisingly he did. He got a pin and a glass of water as we all gathered closer to the walls. Right when he was about to pin it in, he dropped the pin right below on the ground. He then asked me to get the pin, of course he couldn’t do it him self cause he was holding the glass of water. So i bent down right below the glass of water to pick up the pin, then suddenly he just poured the whole clunk of water (on purpose) onto me. Since there were so many people gathering around they just all bursted into laughter, trust me, it was ‘humiliating’. But that wasn’t the end of the joke, since i thought the cup of water was just normal tap water, i thought to my self that it would dry eventually. I found out that it wasn’t water when i was sitting in the middle of the soccer field while ants (red ants by the way) starting crawling up my shoes and arms.
I guess i could relate to Malvolio because;
- we were both the victim of a joke
- we were both humiliated (i was humiliated infront of my friends and he was humiliated infront of Olivia)
- we were both in pain (they might be different types of pain but i was in pain from the ant bites and he was in pain from the disapointment of Olivia not being in love with him as he had found out)
Make a list of all the epithets that are used for characters in 2.5 (e.g. “rascally sheep-biter,” “overweening rogue”).
- niggardly rascally sheep-biter (2.5.4-5)
- little villain (2.5.11)
- contemplative idiot (2.5.16)
- overweening rogue (2.5.25)
- rare turkey-cock (2.5.26)
- foolish knight (2.5.63-64)
- woodcock (2.5.69)
- noble gull-catcher (2.5.54)
The Amazing ❤David Choi❤

This is (part of) the lyrics for the song called ‘That Girl’ or in this case, i changed it to ‘That guy’. It was written by David Choi, a teenage korean song writer. I find his songs completely amazing and just wanted to share an example with you. This is one of my favourite song that he wrote, you can listen to it at this link; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lnio-pqLPgg
Oh, tonight I’m feeling fine
I’m alone, just wasting time
No Friday movie nights
Or romantic candle lights
I’m just having conversations
With the thoughts in my head
All I hear are angels crying
Oh, won’t they just sing instead
It would be wrong for me to say;
I don’t need that guy by my side
I don’t need that guy in my life
I don’t want to talk it out
Or let him hold me when i cry
I don’t want to say he’s my kind
I don’t want to say that he’s mine
I don’t want to tell him that
I love him more than life
More than life
Honestly, this won’t do
How is he doing?
I tell myself I’m feeling swell
But I know I’m such a fool
I know it’s wrong for me to say;
I don’t need that guy by my side
I don’t need that guy in my life
I don’t want to talk it out
Or hold him hold me when i cry
I don’t want to say he’s my kind
I don’t want to say that he’s mine
I don’t want to tell him that
I love him more than life
More than life

Think again about the views of love you met in 2.4.
- Do you think there’s a difference in the way men love and the way women love? Explain.
I don’t think there’s a difference between a women’s love and a men’s love. I mean, love is love, they’re the same thing; just depending on how you’ll express it to your loved ones.
- Do either Viola or Orsino express views similar to your own? Or do you have a position on this question different from both of these characters?
Yes it does. I am a kind of soft hearted person as I would get shy around the boy that I like which would definately relate to how Viola/Cesario fancies Orsino but had to keep it to her self for several reasons.
- Find a line in this scene that you like or that strikes you in some way and comment on it.
”Pistol him, pistol him!” (2.5.32)
I like this line because it is was interesting way express his anger.
